| Carlos Cobato from Spain shot this magnificent Eland bull (see photo) on the farm Berg-en-Dal hunting with PJ Safaris in the Musina area (Limpopo Province) the past hunting season.
It was late afternoon on the second to the last day of the Safari when Carlos shot this Eland over a distance of about 60 meters (66 yards) with his 300 Win Mag, loaded with 180gr Winchester ammunition.
This Eland was part of a herd of eight bulls, which they were stalking for about half an hour. The first shot was placed on the shoulder and the Elands were starting to move away when Carlos got a second shot from an angle from behind which brought the Eland to a stand after 150 meters (164 yards). It was getting dark very quickly and we insisted Carlos to finish it off with a final shot to the lungs.
After the Eland was skinned we found that all the bullets had penetrated the lungs but did not go through the animal, showing that the right ammunition was used.
The horns were measured and it was a magnificent 46 inches (1.17 meters)! After we had a look at the Rowland Ward Record Book we found that Carlos's Eland could be the potential new number 2.
After the drying period of 30 days, the horns measured 45 3/8 inches (1.16 meters), the New Number 2 Eland in Rowland Ward! Safari Taxidermy, who will also register this trophy into Rowland Ward, will mount this magnificent trophy.
